Catfight

It wasn’t just the sudden surprise of seeing Ta’ra there that disorientated me, but I’d also stepped from the winter into an intense and humid summer heat. The sun blazed down from an empty sky, and birds chittered all around us. I felt, in a way, I should be out hunting. Part of me wanted to just hide under the shade in this weather as well. But I knew I had to do something about Ta’ra. I couldn’t let her get away again.

Ta’ra’s eyes were still closed, and she faced me and hissed at me, displaying sharp fangs. I could smell raw meat on her breath, and I wondered if Astravar had hypnotised her into eating a rabbit just like he had with me many moons ago. Ta’ra was the same size as me still, and I worried she might become twice my size or even larger and devour me whole. She expressed anger, much of it, and it took me a moment to realise that this wasn’t actually her anger but Astravar who had taken control of her body.

“Dragoncat,” he said through Ta’ra’s mouth. “You weren’t meant to come here. Everywhere I go, you seem to want to meddle with my plans.”

“Just open up a portal back to my home, and you won’t have to deal with me anymore.”

Ta’ra opened her mouth and cackled in an unnervingly unfeline like way. “Do you really think I’m so stupid, Dragoncat? Our destinies are intertwined, and I need you somewhere I can keep an eye on you. If only you would see the advantages of the power I can give to you. You wouldn’t have to go hungry again.”

“Everything you want,” I said, “is for your own selfish gain, Astravar.”

“Coming from a naturally selfish creature himself. How would you behave, I wonder, if you had access to such power? You would never go hungry again.”

“I never went hungry in my own world either. Until you yanked me across dimensions and forced me to fend for myself here.”

“And I can make it worth your while, one day.”

“No. I don’t know what you’re planning, Astravar. But I won’t let you get Ta’ra involved in this.”

“But why do you care about her so much?”

“Because she’s of my own kin.”

“Is she?”

I took a deep breath. “Whatever she was before, she’s a cat now.”

I was circling Ta’ra, growling at her, and I could feel the fury boiling within me. I was ready to fight for her freedom. It felt odd not to be able to look into her eyes as she bared her teeth at me, but I could imagine them green and glowing underneath her eyelids. Ta’ra was in there somewhere, and I needed to remind her of who she was.

“Very well,” she – or rather Astravar – said in a deep growl. “I had hoped there would be a way of turning you over to my side with your soul intact. You’d be much more intelligent that way. Alas, it’s not meant to be.”

I readied myself to pounce, but Ta’ra beat me to it.
